EDITORIAL POLICY

Unashamedly PONRABBEL will focus on the cultural production of the Tamar/Esk region – the CULTURALlandscape of CATCHMENT43. Over time the editorial policies will be refined but the Tamar Esk cum CATCHMENT43 focus that defines the publication in all its manifestations. By being ‘place oriented’, having 'placedness', rather than narrowing the options of what will be published the contrary will be the case.

Places have rich stories attached to them and the Tamar/Esk (CATCHMENT43) region likewise has a rich treasury of stories and cultural expressions. All of these stories come with various layers of cultural cargo. Some are founded in legend belonging to elsewhere but somehow at home here; others are loaded with the histories that find themselves at home here; others are based on myths, lies and rumour but are nonetheless equally at home here; others still are a part of laconic yarn-telling that find a place in the region's social networks.

The telling of, expressions of and the 'mapping' of these stories becomes an exercise in 'deep mapping'. An example of deep mapping is England's Common Ground 'movement' in England that celebrates local distinctiveness. While not aiming to mirror Common Ground in Tasmania, PONRABBEL will embrace the principles of and explore the boundaries of the deep mapping idea and what it offers relative to exploring the Tamar Esk region's placedness.

PEER REVIEW POLICY

It would be an advantage for some writers, artists and researchers to have their contributions peer reviewed. PONRABBEL's policy is to accommodate contributor's requests for peer reviews and where editors believe it appropriate, peer review various contributions on a case by case basis.

Typically the preferred peer review process will be a double blind process where the author doesn't know the reviewers and vice versa. Typically this will mean that the reviewing may well take place outside Tasmania.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The issue of 'acknowledgement' is sometimes contentious but it is increasingly important. PONRABBEL encourages full disclosure of all the people and sensibilities that lend substance to a contribution. For the most part the issue of acknowledgement is a common sense issue but when you enter the realm of DEEPmapping.

In addition to these considerations there is the issue of the veracity of the story in the DEEPmapping context. If a story is based upon a local myth, rumour or out and out lie PONRABBEL aims to acknowledge these things. Consistent with that a 'PLF Factor' – Poetic License Factor – will be used to denote the level PLF in the article/contribution.

The PLF will be graded between 2 and 9 on the basic assumption that in every tall story there is a grain of truth thus it will be graded PLF:2. Likewise, in every story there  attempt at TRUTHtelling there will be an element of PL thus the highest grading will be PLF:2.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

Contributors are asked to supply a declaration of authenticity and intellectual property ownership/s. In the case of collaborative work please all collaborators and identify the primary contributor. In the case of images quoted in research and critical writing please identify the source.

IMAGES

Please identify the photographer or the source of a photograph when including the photographs of other in your contribution. Given that website are notoriously ephemeral please supply images and graphics from a website as a JPEG COPY and provide the current URL where the image is posted.

Generally speaking it is envisaged that preference will be given to square format images in the presentation of contributions.

Sizes: It is envisaged that images will be published in the first instance online. Thus the should be provided as 72 DPI JPEG 1,000 pixels wide. If you hold larger files more suitable for HARDcopy publication please indicate when submiting a contribution.

It is also envisaged that over time contributions will be compiled and published in a hardcopy format. Therefore PONRABBEL requests contributors to provide high resolution versions of their images at the same time as submitting their 72 DPI images.

SPONSORSHIPS

PONRABBEL will attempt to find sponsorships for contributions to both online and hardcopy publications. If contributors who are employed as full-time academics will be deemed as being sponsored by their institution, or self sponsored, and their contributions will be peer reviewed as a matter of course.

Contributors may find their own sponsors for their contributions but inclusion in a publication will be an editorial prerogative.

PONRABBEL will be proactive in seeking sponsorships for publications (online & hardcopy) in order that as many Tamar/Esk- CATCHMENT43 stories get to told.

PROOF READING

All contributions received by the PONRABBEL editorial group will need to be verified that they have been independently proofread for spelling, grammar and style. This is not to say that editorial group is looking to establish a singular PONRABBEL voice. Indeed, this not the case and contributors will 'write in the voice' they are most comfortable with and that a regional audience will feel comfortable with also.

ABSTRACTS

Authors are requested to provide a 150 to 200 word abstract (précis or synopsis) with their contribution be it text based or a set of images.

ARTICLES

Long Articles: It is anticipated that PONRABBEL will be publishing online and in an ad hoc way, in hardcopy formats. For long article the current guideline is 3000 to 5000 words. However longer articles will be considered given that online publications are not constrained by 'print space'. For longer articles (longer than 5000 words) that published in a PONRABBEL hardcopy format it is likely that an edited version will be published and with the full version being published online or in a companion digital publication. Contributions supported by images and graphics will be appreciated.

Short Articles: The submission of short  articles in the range of 300 to 1000 words are encouraged. They may be critical reviews, short stories, parodies, poetry, essays, whatever. Contributions supported by images and graphics will be appreciated.

LETTERS

It is anticipated that some PONRABBEL contributors will wish to use the publication as means of reaching an audience for commentaries that may well fall outside the interest of local and state newspapers and/or special interest publications. Letters to the Editors and Open Letters of approximately 300 words will be considered.

CRITICAL REVIEWS

It is anticipated that PONRABBEL will publish critical reviews with increasing frequency. In the Tamar Esk region there is a lack of critical commentary. Much of this due to the scale of the community, constraints felt by newspapers and the closeness of most community networks. However, without incisive critical reviews audiences close to home it makes it more difficult for cultural producers to 'cut it' on the national, or indeed the international stage.

PONRABBEL will make every effort to publish, and encourage the publication, a broad spectrum of critical reviews.

DISCUSSION PAPERS

PONRABBEL will be proactive in encouraging commentators across the region to use the publication such commentators to advance ideas. There will be a commitment to work with get  the commentators to the attention they are seeking.

ANTHOLOGIES AND MONOGRAPHS

It is anticipated that there will be a demand for the publication of monographs and anthologies relevant to Tamar Esk cultural producers and audiences. Such publications may well be sponsored within the community or further afield. Nonetheless, PONRABBEL will facilitate an editing and/or peer review process that will counter ill informed criticism.

HARDCOPY PUBLICATIONS

limited edition It is anticipated that in time PONRABBEL will seek funding for the publication of books of various kinds, pamphlets, posters an cards. The primary purpose in doing so will be to attempt to provide income opportunities for Tamar Esk cultural producers and businesses in the PONRABBEL network.
